The standard way to write VoIP is like this with a capital V, small o and capital IP. Looks sort of cute, I think.

Anyway, it stands for Voice over Internet Protocol.

Which very quickly means you can chat on the phone over the internet instead of over your normal (analog) phone lines.

And, just to confuse things a bit more, it is sometimes also known as Voice over Broadband, Internet telephony, IP Telephony, Broadband Phone and Broadband telephony.
